Experimental Film in the HFA Collection

Image from the film outer spaceThere are over two hundred experimental films in the Harvard Film Archive, ranging from key works of the Soviet and European 1920’s avant-gardes to extensive holdings of films by major figures in American experimental cinema such as Abigail Child, Warren Sonbert, and Bruce Conner. Celebrated innovators in animation (Norman McClaren), visual abstraction (Jordan Belson), collage (Arthur Lipsett), and documentary form (Joris Ivens) can be found alongside films by celebrated artists very active in the last few decades such as Peter Hutton, Nathaniel Dorsky and Peter Tscherkassky. Researchers can also find titles by historic figures Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, Gunvor Nelson, Kurt Kren, George Kuchar, Paul Sharits, James Broughton, Hollis Frampton, Ernie Gehr and Peter Kubelka.
