Online Resources
Most of the Japan-related resources are accessible from off-campus while some of them are available for on-site use only. For questions regarding these resources, please consult the DCJ Librarian, Kazuko Sakaguchi, via e-mail.
- CiNii: Journal citation information by the National Institute of Informatics in Japan (NII): Coverage is strongest for the sciences, but some humanities and social sciences content is available since the 1880s to present.
- JapanKnowledge: Provides access to a wide range of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other resources, including Nihon dai hyakka zensho (Encyclopedia Nipponica), Encyclopedia of Japan, Nihon jinmei daijiten, Nihon kokugo daijiten, JKN Who's Who, and others.
- Kikuzo II Visual for Libraries: Searchable full text reproductions of Asahi Shimbun since 1945 to Present. This also contains Asahi’s weekly journal Aera (1988 - ), the latest issue of Chiezo, and Historical Photo Archives (Showa 1 - 20).
- MAGAZINE PLUS: A consolidated journal index database covering over 14,500 journal titles since 1975
- Nichigai / Assist WHO (in-library use only): Biographical database containing more than 420,000 post-Meiji period (after 1868) biographies. Includes both deceased and living figures.
- Nikkei Telecom 21 (in-library use only): Japan's oldest commercial database service covering all major Japanese newspapers. Note: This database is unavailable daily between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, so plan use accordingly. Coverage varies (Nikkei: 1975 – present; other major newspapers: mid 1980s – present). Please note: Nikkei Telecom 21 has pay-per-view pricing structure and is relatively expensive (¥5 - ¥40 for a headline and ¥50 - ¥400 for a full-text article). First you may search Factiva or Nikkei goo, which provide headlines of Nikkei’s newspapers and magazines free of charge for the current year. Appointments are recommended to ensure efficient use of this service. - Minryoku 2006: Statistical database with information on local governments, in CD-ROM format.
- Yomiuri Shimbun - Meiji, Taisho, and Showa pre- and post-war: Full-image reproductions of the newspaper at designated terminals at DCJ and HYL. Also available off-campus access (Technical Requirement – Windows operating system and Internet Explorer only) Coverage: 1875 – 1970.
