Overview

Materials in the Western-Languages Collection complement those in the East Asian-language collections and are selected to support teaching and research. Primary responsibility for collecting on East Asia in Western languages is held by Widener Library and by libraries that collect on specific subjects (e.g., Law, Divinity, Fine Arts). The Harvard-Yenching Western-Languages Collection acquires all Western-language course reserves, reference works, scholarly journals (primarily in English), historical newspapers (in microformats) and academic titles, and has particularly strong holdings of newspapers and association publications. The collection focus is on the social sciences and humanities generally, with emphasis on history, language, and literature.

The Western-Languages section coordinates the collection in Tibetan and has responsibility for the photographic and personal papers held by the Harvard-Yenching Library. The Librarian for Western Languages, Dr. Raymond Lum, is also the Asian Bibliographer in Harvard's Widener Library, with responsibility for acquisition of Western-language publications from East, South, and Southeast Asia, and for Sanskrit publications.
