Boswell's Life

Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976). Title page illustration for Everybody’s Boswell. 1930. Ink on board. MS Hyde 95 (1)

Although Ernest Shepard is unquestionably best known for his illustrations for A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books, he had a long and varied career as an illustrator and cartoonist. In 1930, G. Bell & Sons commissioned him to illustrate an abridged edition of Boswell's Life, and produced a suite of thirteen drawings, including the title page displayed here, which depicts Boswell and Johnson walking together down a busy London street.
