The Public Poet

Julia Margaret Cameron, photographer. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Photogravure from Alfred Lord Tennyson and His Friends (London:  T. Fisher Unwin, 1893).

*2001M-8, box 2. Purchased with the Bayard Livingston and Kate Gray Kilgour fund, 2001. Houghton Library.

Cameron took advantage of Longfellow's 1868 visit to Tennyson, her neighbor on the Isle of Wight. "Longfellow, you will have to do whatever she tells you," Tennyson reportedly said. "I'll come back soon and see what is left of you." This photogravure was produced from Cameron's original photograph.
