September 1, 2009 – Hundreds of Harvard freshman attended the annual Freshman Open House at Lamont Library on Monday to get an introduction to HCL libraries and the services they offer. Members of Lamont’s staff, as well as HCL and FAS colleagues, offered students tours of Lamont, served as greeters and helped advise students on the best way to access library resources.

More than 300 students toured through the library during the Open House, which highlighted the areas and collections students are likely to use during the academic year, including Research Services, the Circulation desk, Morse Music and Media and Ginsberg and Donatelli reading rooms. Other tour stops highlighted the library’s array of online resources, including services like Scan and Deliver and Ask Us Live, an instant-messaging tool which allows students to communicate directly with Research Librarians.

The event also gave freshmen the opportunity to learn about additional resources located within Lamont, like the Woodberry Poetry Room and the Language Resource Center, as well as other campus organizations, including the Bureau of Study Counsel, which offers tutoring services to undergraduates. Tours of the other libraries—Cabot, Widener, Houghton, Harvard-Yenching, Loeb Music, Fine Arts, and Tozzer – will be offered later in the term.

Students attending the open house received a free keyring light, and were encouraged to sign up for a raffle drawing. The grand prize for the drawing is a Klean Kanteen water bottle, two tickets to the Museum of Science, two tickets to the New England Aquarium, two AMC Theatres movie passes, two Brattle Cinema passes, an MBTA Charlie Card, a Professor Pathfinder map and snack foods. Six runner-up prizes, which include stainless steel Lamont coffee mugs and board games, will also be given out. Prizes will be distributed at a time to be determined later.
