African Video Collections

1. Introduction

This list is a revised, expanded, and reformatted version of a list originally compiled by Rita Breen, Executive Officer of the Committee on African Studies. The main collection of the items on this list is housed in Widener Library, but there are smaller collections in other locations including Lamont Library, Quad Library, Tozzer Library, Loeb Music Library, Loeb Design Library, Andover-Theological Library, Gutman Education Library, Countway Medical Library and Schlesinger Library. Online requests can be made for items housed in the Harvard Depository.

The list focuses on videocassettes, DVDs and films from, on, or about Sub-Saharan Africa. For the sake of brevity, all these items will be referred to as "videos". Information provided for each video includes:

  • main title, linked directly to the HOLLIS record
  • place and date of production
  • video length
  • a brief description (when available)
  • links to relevant library resources
  • geographic area of focus
  • selected HOLLIS subject headings
  • language information (when available)
  • variant or other titles (italics)

Further information such as format (videodisc, VHS, film, or DVD), holding library, circulation policy, and loan period can be obtained from the HOLLIS record.

This site is a work in progress and will be periodically updated as Harvard video collections grow. Please visit us often. Feedback, comments, and suggestions are welcome.
