Beyond the Basics in Biomedical Engineering

This guide provides a set of resources for advanced undergraduate research in Biomedical Engineering at the Cabot Science Library. This list is not intended to be exhaustive or comprehensive. Cabot Library holds the general science collections for the university; additional resources are available at the Countway Library of Medicine, the Gordon McKay Library of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Ernst Mayr Library of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Please consult the HOLLIS catalog and the E-Research @ Harvard site for all of Harvard’s holdings.

Books

Books on biomedical engineering are shelved at these locations in the Library of Congress system: R856-R857; TA164; TP248.13-248.65. In the National Library of Medicine system (used at Countway Library), they are shelved at QT 36 – QT 37.5.

Journals and Databases for Journal Articles

Journals

Cabot Science Library has a large collection of current journals on the main floor of the library. We have couches and arm chairs available for comfortable browsing of the collection. Older issues can be found in the basement. For access to electronic copies of journals, look up the journal’s title in the HOLLIS catalog, where an internet link will be available if Harvard owns a subscription. Or you may use the E-Journals list available through the E-Research @ Harvard site. To locate individual articles within the journals, use one of the databases listed in this guide (individual articles are not available in the catalog or the e-journal list).

Databases for Journal Articles

PubMed (MEDLINE) (1950 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:pubmedpi  The major database for the study and practice of medicine, MEDLINE indexes articles from almost 5000 medical journals from 70 countries. PubMed provides free access to MEDLINE, but use the above link to ensure access to full text articles for journals that Harvard subscribes to.

BIOSIS Previews (1969 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:biosisp1  The largest database for life sciences research, includes coverage of bioengineering and biotechnology. Over 5500 journals are covered, as well as selected books and meeting proceedings.

INSPEC (1898 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:inspecal   A major database in engineering, covering all aspects of the discipline, including electrical and computer engineering. 3400 journals and over 2000 conference proceedings are indexed.

Citation Indexes / Web of Science (1900 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:scicitin  Science Citation Index is the primary multidisciplinary database in the sciences. Ability to perform citation searching – searching the bibliographies of papers - allows the searcher to trace concepts throughout the literature.

Metadex (1966 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:metadexx  Specialized database covering information on metals and alloys. Some overlap with INSPEC, but also some unique content. The following descriptors may be helpful when searching: biomedical materials, biocompatibility, prosthetics, dental alloys, coatings, surgical implants, composite materials.

Applied Science Abstracts    (1983 -)
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:apscitec     All fields of engineering, as well as computer technology and robotics are covered. Journals and trade and industry publications are included. Use the Thesaurus button to help locate precise searching terms (for example, “biomedical materials”).
