This link will bring you to a page that lists World Bank globalization data and statistics resources. Select “A New Database on Foreign Direct Investment.” This database is comprised of FDI-related spreadsheets that cover inward and outward flows by country, stocks by sector and by country, ratings, and country risk. Most variables are available from 1970-1998. The preformatted spreadsheets are accompanied by a nine-page data documentation guide. The data is culled from the following sources: IMF, OECD, BEA (US), various national statistics offices, Institutional Investors Inc. (ratings), and Political Risk Services Group (International Country Risk Guide).

Foreign Direct Investment Database
UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development)
The Foreign Direct Investment online database provides inflow and outflow aggregate data for over 190 different economies. Data relating to inward and outward stocks of foreign direct investment are also included in this database. The FDI Statistics Website provides access to definitions of FDI related terminology, an explanation of sources and the limitations, availability and estimates of the FDI data and more.

World Investment Directory
UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development)
This online version of the directory provides access to detailed “information about foreign direct investment in a country, comprising detailed statistics on flows, stocks and TNC operations, disaggregated by components, industry and investor/recipient country.” The country reports are in PDF format. The World Investment Report is also available online.

International Economic Accounts
BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis)
This database includes Foreign Direct Investment Data in the US and US Direct Investment Abroad. There is some data that is available at the country and regional level.

HOLLIS E-Resources

World Development Indicators (WDI)
World Bank
This database allows the user to select the country, series and number of years. WDI publishes FDI net and inflow data (net, net inflows as % of GDP, net inflows as % of gross capital formation, net inflows balance of payments). The data are available from 1960-present.

SourceOECD
OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)
SourceOECD includes a database titled “International Direct Investment Statistics.” Data is available by country and industrial sector. Most variables are available from 1980-present. This database allows the user to select the data (partner country, inflows, outflows, inflow position, outflow position, reporting country, and number of years) and select the download format.

EIU Country Data
EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit)
This database includes foreign direct investment data at the country level. Various FDI variables can be found under the foreign payments series. The database provides actual data from 1980-present, with forecasts to 2030. This resource allows the user to select the countries, series and number of years.

International Financial Statistics Online (International Monetary Fund)
This database contains time series data from 1948. It provides international statistics on international and domestic finance. Reports are made on most countries of the world detailing exchange rates, international liquidity, interest rates, money and banking, prices, inflation, deflation, government accounts, national accounts, and international transactions including direct investment abroad.

Micro-level Data Resources

World Tables of Economic and Social Indicators
World Bank (International Economics Department)
Available through the IQSS Dataverse Network. Search by title in the main search box. The World Tables of Economic and Social Indicators has net FDI data for over 180 countries from 1950-1992. Other economic indicators in this dataset include GNP, GDP, public long-term debt, public consumption and government consumption. The social indicators include population, birth rate, life expectancy at birth, food production per capita and labor force data.
