Mission and Priorities

The French-Italian Division, one of four language divisions in HCL Technical Services, supports the mission of the Harvard College Library by holding primary responsibility for the acquisition and cataloging of French and Italian material in all formats. In addition, we acquire and catalog material in Romanian, Albanian, Creole French & Pidgins, Old and Middle French, Langue d'oc, Maltese, Raeto-Romance, Breton, Sardinian, Romany and various Italian dialects.

Organizational priorities include training for present and future needs, reducing backlogs through effective use of staff and resources, open communication, and improvements to the work environment while maintaining a high level of quality in our work in accordance with national bibliographic standards. We also serve as a resource to the library community by providing language support not only for our areas of responsibility, but also for Arabic, Amharic, and Sanskrit.

Providing intellectual access to HCL collections to our patrons, whether they be students, staff and faculty of Harvard or scholars in the international community, is our highest priority. We work in collaboration with the Collection Development, Research Services and Access Services Departments among others.

The values embraced by the Division include:

· Respect and recognition
