Ceasing Local Shelflisting during Copy Cataloging for Widener Library Stacks
6 April 2009

After lengthy evaluation and consultation with colleagues from Widener Collection Development, Access Services and Research Services, HCL Technical Services will cease local shelflisting for books that we copy catalog for the Widener Stacks.

Effective immediately, when copy cataloging for the Widener Stacks using a record that contains a fully-cuttered LC-scheme call number in an 050 or 090 field, we will accept the call number without review.

A small number of exceptions to this practice will be allowed:

  • Do not use:

    --PZ call numbers
    --High Z call numbers (Z1200 or higher) – Route to Classifier for evaluation.
    --Analytic call numbers (easily identified by volume enumeration at the end)
         --Locally assigned, analytic call numbers are not affected by this change.

  • When cataloging later editions of works for which earlier editions are in the Widener Stacks, we will use the same LC call number that was assigned for the earlier edition and update the date as necessary. Add a work letter to the end of the call number for different editions published in the same year.

Route to a classifier:

  • If the cataloging record does not include an LC-scheme call number in an 050 or 090 field;
  • If the call number is incomplete, invalid (as above), or does not end in a date.
